Rampant Hearts Defeat Meek The Hoops to Extend Eight Pts in Front
Match summary
- Kyziridis & Shankland secure victory for the hosts and propel them eight points clear at summit
- Callum McGregor cancelled out the early own goal by Dane Murray
- Hearts extend 13 games unbeaten for the first occasion in over two decades
The dominant Edinburgh side powered eight points clear of Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership to bolster their early-season title credentials and deepen the struggles around the Celtic team.
Alexandros Kyziridis' fine strike and a spot-kick from Shankland gave Derek McInnes' side a 3-1 lead that the title holders could not recover from.
Dane Murray - one of three youngsters in the Celtic starting lineup - slashed into his own net in the early stages to put Hearts ahead at a energetic Tynecastle, and it was the youngster's infringement that led to the penalty.
Callum McGregor's classy first goal of the season had swiftly equalized the first goal, and the Swedish attacker almost put Celtic in front, opting for finesse over power and allowing the Hearts keeper to save from close range.
But Derek McInnes' irrepressible Hearts seized control again to hand the visitors to back-to-back losses for the first time since 2023.
It also gives the Edinburgh side a significant lead at the summit.
The last time they were this far ahead was in 2005-06 under their former manager, when they ended as runners-up - a rare instance that a team has not secured the title having held such a lead in the last three decades.
McInnes, whose Aberdeen side were second to Celtic on four occasions, has been working hard to play down championship discussions, as Hearts seek their maiden league title since the 1960s.
The Celtic boss has experienced this previously at the club - both flawless and stuttering starts to a season. He's never ended as runner-up.
But on the weekend's performance, this Hearts team showed they need to be taken seriously.
Match Analysis: Hearts Take Advantage of Depleted The Visitors
Hearts started with the self-assurance of a side undefeated in the league this season - fans' favourite Kyziridis delivered a ball for the striker to stab wide.
Celtic didn't aid their cause with some uncharacteristic carelessness in possession and they faltered under their initial test.
Claudio Braga's header was touched on to a post by Kasper Schmeichel and the follow-up from Shankland was turned into the net by the unfortunate Murray, in for the absent center-back.
The away side grew into the contest and started stringing passes together. From a flowing attack, the midfielder released Tierney to square for McGregor, who slotted home.
Aside from the Nygren chance, Celtic struggled to create much for lone frontman Jonny Kenny or his substitute Yamada amid the absence of injured forwards Kelechi Iheanacho and Daizen Maeda.
The home team rediscovered their energy and versatility in attacking from across the final third. Kyziridis, a standout performer of the club's relationship with shareholder Tony Bloom's Jamestown Analytics, struck low past the goalkeeper from the just outside the area.
Almost straight away, the defender tripped the midfielder in the right side of the box and the penalty taker scored. And it could've been an even more handsome win, had substitute Ageu not been stopped by the shot-stopper.
The visitors' performance after the break was somewhat summed up in two incidents involving record signing Arne Engles.
The set-piece from Engles delivery was in sharp opposition to his midweek exploits in the Europa League win over Sturm Graz and the national team player was then booked for a cynical foul.
Post-Match Comments
The Hearts manager: "The effort from the squad is evident, the team spirit. That's not sufficient on its own to win games consistently.
"Our strength lies in, is skillful players. You're witnessing it from a lot of players who have been here before. Some of the new signings are keen to demonstrate their quality.
"We're in a positive moment at the minute, but it's just one win. It's important for us to maintain this form. We've got much work ahead, plenty to improve. Following the initial fixtures is typically a benchmark of your standing."
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: "It's a really poor goal from our perspective. We didn't move when the play was recycled as a line so when they play it, they ought to be caught offside but didn't. We have got to do better with the shot.
"There's still so many points to play for. It's still so early. It's only nine games in. Obviously, being eight points behind is not what we would want. The positive is there's so many games to play.
"Our attention must turn on the present and look to achieve greater stability and better performance in our play."
