Mount Mahameru Eruption in the Southeast Asian nation Prompts Emergency Relocations

The nation's Mount Semeru, the highest peak on Java island, has exploded, covering several villages with volcanic ash, prompting evacuations and leading authorities to raise the alert to the highest level.

The mountain in East Java province unleashed searing clouds of fiery ash and a mixture of stone, molten rock, and gases that travelled up to 4 miles down its slopes several times from midday to evening, while a dense plume of fiery clouds rose 2km into the sky, according to the nation's geological authority.

The outbursts that unfolded throughout the day compelled officials to raise the mountain's warning status on two occasions, from the third-highest level to the highest, the agency said. No deaths or injuries have been announced.

Over three hundred inhabitants in the three villages most at risk in the area of Lumajang were relocated to official safe havens, as mentioned by a representative for the national disaster mitigation agency.

He said that increased activity of the mountain on the afternoon of Wednesday prompted officials to expand the danger zone to 8km from the crater. Residents were advised to stay clear from an area along the Kobokan River, which is the path of the lava flow, as searing gas flowed down the volcano's sides.

Videos on social media displayed a dense cloud of ash sweeping through a wooded ravine to a waterway beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces smeared with volcanic dust and water, escaped to temporary shelters or left for alternative secure locations.

Regional news outlets indicated that emergency teams were facing challenges to rescue about 178 individuals stranded on the 3,676-metre mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The group comprised 137 hikers, 15 carriers, seven escorts and six travel representatives, according to an spokesperson with the protected area.

“They remain secure at Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post,” an official said in a recorded message. He said the station was located 2.8 miles from the crater on the northern slope of the volcano, which is not in the path of the fiery cloud movement that was observed traveling to the south-southeast. Bad weather and rain forced the group to spend the night there, he added.

The volcano, also called Mahameru, has burst numerous times in the last two centuries. However, as is the case with numerous of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, thousands of people continue to reside on its productive highlands.

The mountain's previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 people were killed and hundreds others were burned and villages were submerged in thick mud. The eruption forced the relocation of more than 10,000 residents from their houses.

The country, an island chain of over 280 million people, is located along the Pacific “ring of fire”, a horseshoe-shaped series of fault lines, and is susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
