Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The former official declared he would step back from public positions after House committee released his repeated messages with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a series of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

Summers commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward observing their progress".

Summers, who once presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on recently that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The freshly disclosed messages revealed that the economist corresponded with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of minors.

In additional comments, the technology organization stated it respected the economist's decision to step down.

"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the governing body," OpenAI stated.

Political Context

This news follows after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will then move to the office of President Trump for endorsement. The President has stated he expects to sign the measure, after modifying his view on the issue following pushback from his supporters.

Email Contents

A group of Epstein-connected emails made public by the legislative panel days ago referenced several prominent individuals in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those individuals.

The communications showed that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often attempting to connect the official to influential international personalities.

Personal Response

After the messages were released with the general audience, the former official stated he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to persist in communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and repair bonds with the people closest to me".

Previous Positions

The economist held high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as leader of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.

He led the university from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public duties earlier on this week, he indicated he would persist with his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in the capital where he was a researcher, verified that he was ceased to be affiliated with the group.

He became part of the directorate of the AI company, which develops the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to oust its chief executive the company leader.
